The Sudbury Opera Lovers Organization (SOLO) was founded in 1983 by Gus deBaggis who placed an advertisement in the local Sudbury paper seeking local opera lovers to form a group to enhance the appreciation and further the knowledge & love of opera among similar minded people. The group meets monthly from September through June and meetings were originally held in members' homes. When membership grew beyond the capacity of a typical member’s home the monthly meetings were moved to the Sudbury Fairbank Senior Center. Meetings are typically held on the third Sunday of the month, from September through June from 2:00 - 5:00 PM.
The format is that a presenter researches and prepares an opera - discusses the composer, history, plot, etc and illustrates the presentation by audio & video recordings on DVD, Video and/or CD.
New members are always welcome, whether new to opera or experienced opera fans. We currently have about 55 members, drawn from the Greater Boston area. We usually have an attendance of 30 - 40 at a typical meeting.
Membership is $45 per year or $80 for a couple. For non-members we suggest a $10 donation that can be applied to membership.
Many members and friends try to arrive 10 - 20 minutes before the presentation to socialize. We try to start the meeting at 2:00 PM. There is a 15-minute break about halfway through the presentation, for refreshments, drinks, socializing etc. The meeting usually ends at 5:00 PM.
The Sudbury Opera Lovers are a very friendly group, with a range of knowledge about opera and classical music - from relative newcomers to members who have spent many years listening to and studying opera.
Periodically we invite a group of emerging young artists associated with New England Conservatory or other music organization/schools in the Boston area to perform a selection of opera scenes and arias for our members and the general public. Concert performances are usually at First Parish of Sudbury, Universal Universalist, 327 Concord Road at the junction with Route 27, Sudbury Center, Sudbury, MA.
